Patrick Plastics Inc. is ISO 9001:2000 certified.

The Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization first published the ISO 9000 series of quality management standards in 1987 to provide guidelines for consistent quality practices across international borders. Its objective is to provide uniform quality management standards from company to company regardless of the country of origin. The ISO 9000 series provides general quality management and assurance guidelines as well as quality system models that are universal and can be used by any type or size of organization throughout the world.

Many processes in ISO 9001 focus on the relationship between the supplier and the customer. The ISO registrar verifies the ability of suppliers to meet clearly defined quality requirements that provide purchasers a high degree of confidence that the products and services delivered will continuously and consistently meet their requirement. In 2000, the original ISO 9000 series which consisted of 3 separate categories was streamlined to only one ISO 9001 covering everything necessary from product design to delivery of same.

Today, more than 100 countries have adopted the ISO 9001 quality management system as a national standard. Some countries, most notably those in the European Union, have made ISO 9001 compliance a mandatory part of conformity assessment schemes for certain regulated products. In addition, ISO 9001 is increasingly becoming a factor in obtaining military and government contracts. For example, prominent organizations like the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) now require suppliers to be ISO 9001 compliant.

Because ISO 9001 provides basic guidelines and a framework for quality management and continuous improvement, it is also used as a basis for new system requirements, such as QS-9000 for automobile, AS-9000 for aerospace, TL-9000 for tele-communicate and even ISO 14001 for the environment.

Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL), the leading U.S.-headquartered ISO 9001 registrar, has registered more than 3,400 firms since 1989. Total registrations in the United States will soon reach the 45,000 mark with a growth rate of some 3,000 new registrations each year. Worldwide, there are now nearly 430,000 ISO 9001 registrations; the number of registrations has in fact nearly quadrupled over the past few years.
