9.  The Standard:

The first UL2034 standard for Carbon Monoxide Alarms was introduced by Underwriters Laboratory of the United States of America in collaboration with the Canadian Gas Association on April 30, 1992. This initial standard was in compliance with CGA standard, CGA6.19-M93.

However, this standard left an undefined area dealing with low warning resistance. The City of Chicago suffered from thousands of nuisance alarms in December 1994. Ever since then UL has tried to tighten the standard and a new revision was made effective November 1,1995. This revision was primarily designed to cure the problem of nuisance and/or over-sensitive alarms. At the same time, the gas utility companies attempted to scrutinize more of the testing with respect to temperature, humidity, selectivity and sensitivity tests, with a view to come up with a generally agreed standard.

Finally, UL made a concerted effort to address the issue by revising the UL2034 standard again, this time to accommodate what had been proposed by both the Gas Association as well as the International Approval Services (IAS) with the latest standard of UL2034 to be effective October 1st, 1998. The Canadian Standard Association is applying this new standard CSA(TIL) R-03 throughout Canada.
